FAQS FOR ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER VINUNIVERSITY
- What are the English language requirements I need to meet to enter VinUniversity?
To go directly into VinUniversity’s undergraduate programs without any additional English language training, you will need to submit a recognized international English proficiency test result taken within the last 24 months. The minimum scores for direct entry into VinUniversity’s undergraduate programs are:
- IELTS (Academic) – minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum 79 with at least 20 for writing, 18 for speaking, 15 for reading, and 15 for listening.
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) – Minimum overall score of 58 with no communicative skills score less than 50.
- Cambridge English Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Minimum 176 with no skill below 169 in any component.
- What if my English doesn’t meet the minimum requirements right now?
Students who do not meet the requirements listed above will be provided with pre-sessional English language training in the Summer semester in our Pathway English program, as long as they meet the minimum requirements to join Pathway Intermediate (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent).
- Do I need to take an IELTS test (or other English test)?
If you have an IELTS or other recognized English test which meets the minimum requirements, you can be exempt from taking Pathway English in the Summer semester and go directly into the Fall semester (as long as you meet the other entry requirements.)
If you do not have an international English test result like IELTS, you can take VinUni’s official English placement test in June to determine if you are ready for Pathway English in the Summer semester and, if so, which level you will study. However, this placement test will not allow you to skip Pathway English and go directly into the Fall semester. You will receive one of three results: 1) Eligible for Pathway Advanced in Summer; 2) Eligible for Pathway Intermediate in Summer; 3) Not yet eligible for Pathway Intermediate in Summer.
We currently expect that this English placement test will take place in June 2020, but that may be delayed depending on the Covid-19 situation. We will keep you informed of any changes.
- How do I know what my current level of English is?
To give you an indication of your current English level to help you plan your independent English studies between now and the Summer semester, students with a Conditional Offer will be offered a free online diagnostic English test called Versant English Placement Test. This will not be used to officially place you in an English class – the official VinUni placement test in June will do that – but will help give you advice on your current level of English and how much further study you need to do before the official VinUni English placement test.
More details will be given to you soon to help you prepare for this diagnostic test.
- I meet the minimum English requirements to enter VinUniversity. Will I get any additional English language training?
All students at VinUni, regardless of their English proficiency, will also study two English courses called Academic English 1 and Academic English 2 when they start their first academic semester. These courses will help strengthen students’ written composition and academic skills.
We also have a team of English teaching professionals who will support all students during their studies if they need help with writing skills, assignments, extra practice, etc.
- What will happen if the Covid-19 situation continues and affects face-to-face activities?
If we are not able to conduct the official VinUni English placement test face-to-face in various cities in Vietnam, we will run it online with an exam proctoring service to ensure test security.
If we are not able to conduct Pathway English classes face-to-face in the Summer semester, they will be taught online at the beginning. If we are able to conduct face-to-face after starting, we will switch to face-to-face delivery as soon as possible. If we are not able to conduct face-to-face after starting, we will continue to conduct online for the remainder of the course.
Online classes will be a mix of live classes with all participants studying together with their teacher at the same time, group and pair assignments, and independent learning done at any time.
