Format and Procedures

UROP projects are offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, with a commitment of 20 to 60 hours per month for at least one semester. Most projects occur on VinUni’s campus, but off-campus opportunities (e.g., during exchange semesters) are available with online supervision via meetings or reports.

Course Options

The UROP courses are divided into two options to accommodate the needs of students with different aspirations and levels of research experience.

Option Courses Credit Grade Service Fee Sequence
Option 1: Credit UROP1010, UROP2010, UROP3010, UROP4010 1 Letter Grade None Must be taken in order with the same faculty supervisor
Option 2: Paid UROP1011, UROP2011, UROP3011, UROP4011 0 Pass/Fail Grade Payment based on performance Must be taken in order with the same faculty supervisor

Canvas will serve as the platform for organizing students into research groups and submitting Midterm and Final Reports, which document research progress and findings. For the Paid option, payment instructions will be mentioned on Canvas. The CECS staff coordinates the program, while CECS faculty supervisors review and evaluate student reports.

Application Process

  • CECS emails available research positions with job descriptions. Students review these carefully and contact the faculty supervisor to discuss project details before applying.
  • Students complete the online Application Form. To enroll in the next UROP course, students must confirm continuation through the Form to ensure the faculty name is updated on Student Information System (SIS).
  • Faculty supervisors review applications and may conduct interviews. The Scope of Work and responsibilities will be discussed.
  • If accepted, students register for the UROP course on SIS and join the course on Canvas, where students will access materials and submit reports. For the Paid option, students sign Service Contract outlining duties and payment terms.
  • To add or drop a UROP course, students follow the deadlines in the VinUni Academic Calendar. Missing the drop deadline may result in a Fail grade.
  • Students submit Midterm and Final Reports on Canvas for faculty evaluation. For the Paid option, these reports determine payment approval.
  • Students share the research progress at CECS or VinUni research events, such as poster sessions or conferences, as required by the faculty supervisor and College.

Course Progression

  • Switching Projects: If students change projects but continue working with the same faculty supervisor, students may proceed to the next UROP course (e.g., from UROP1010 to UROP2010).
  • Switching Supervisors: If students work with different faculty supervisors, students must retake from UROP1010 or UROP1011, regardless of prior UROP experience.
  • Switching Options: After completing a UROP course, students may switch between Option 1 (Credit) and Option 2 (Paid) with the faculty supervisor’s approval by email. For example, after UROP1010, students can enroll in UROP2011 instead of UROP2010.
